Garden Beds That Survive
Lincoln's Clay

New beds, mulch refreshes, edging, and plantings — built on real soil prep, with bulk mulch from Outdoor Solutions in Roca, quoted as one fixed number.

Beds Built for the Plants,
Not Just the Photo

Mulch depth, fabric, rock-vs-mulch, where the heat is — the boring details are what keep a bed looking good and your plants alive past year one. We get them right and tell you straight which choice fits your yard.

🌳

Bulk Mulch, Done Right

Hardwood mulch laid 2–3 inches deep — enough to choke weeds and hold moisture, never mounded against trunks where it rots the bark. We pull from Outdoor Solutions in Roca at roughly $35–$45 a yard, so you get bulk pricing instead of marked-up bag counts from the box store.

🪨

Rock & Decorative Stone

River rock, decorative gravel, and limestone over quality fabric — the right call for dry side yards, fence lines, downspouts, and drainage runs. It costs more upfront and runs hot in full sun, so we'll be honest about where it belongs and where mulch will serve your plants better.

📐

Crisp Bed Edging

A cut spade edge or steel, vinyl, or paver border that gives beds a clean line and keeps mulch out of the lawn and grass out of the bed. Sharp edges are the single thing that makes a whole yard read as intentional — even before anything blooms.

🪴

Planting & Transplanting

Shrubs, perennials, and ornamental trees chosen for Lincoln's climate and the bed's actual sun exposure, plus relocating plants you already have when we redesign a space. We aim plantings at the spring or fall shoulder seasons, when roots establish without summer heat stress.

🌿

Weeding & Soil Prep

We pull existing growth, cut clean bed lines, and amend the heavy clay before anything goes in. Organic mulch keeps feeding that soil every year as it breaks down — one reason we steer most planted beds toward mulch over rock, which does nothing for the dirt underneath it.

One Fixed Number,
Before We Break Ground

An average mulch refresh runs around $800 and a brand-new bed around $1,000 — quoted as one fixed, itemized number up front. Bulk hardwood mulch from Outdoor Solutions in Roca, plants picked for clay soil and your sun exposure, and fabric only where it actually belongs.

Garden Bed
Questions Answered

How deep should mulch be in garden beds?

Two to three inches is the sweet spot. That's thick enough to suppress weeds, hold soil moisture so you water less, and even out soil temperature, without smothering roots. Thicker isn't better — piling it deep, or mounding it up against trunks and stems in a "mulch volcano," traps moisture against the bark and invites rot and pests. We keep mulch pulled back a couple inches from every trunk and crown.

Should I use mulch or rock in my beds?

For beds with shrubs and perennials you care about — especially on a hot south- or west-facing wall — mulch wins. It insulates and cools the soil, holds moisture, and breaks down to feed Lincoln's heavy clay. Rock absorbs and radiates heat; a rock bed in full July sun can top 130°F and slowly cook foundation plantings. Rock earns its place in low- or no-plant spots: dry side yards, fence lines, around downspouts, and drainage runs where you want the water-shedding. We're happy to tell you which your specific bed should be — here's the full breakdown.

Does landscape fabric go under mulch?

Under rock, yes — quality fabric is what keeps stone from sinking into the soil and blocks weeds from below. Under organic mulch, no. Fabric under mulch cuts the bed off from the natural cycle that lets mulch break down and improve the soil, and within a couple years debris builds a thin rooting layer on top of the fabric so weeds grow anyway — now tangled in the fabric and worse to pull. So we fabric rock beds and skip it under mulch.

When is the best time to install garden beds in Lincoln, NE?

Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are the prime windows. Spring gives new plantings the whole season to root in; fall planting benefits from warm soil, cooler air, and far less watering stress. We can build beds and refresh mulch through most of the year as conditions allow — it's really the live plantings that care about the calendar, not the bed prep, edging, or mulch itself. For trees and shrubs specifically, see our guide to the best time to plant in Nebraska.

Can you transplant existing plants to new locations?

Yes — we regularly move shrubs, perennials, and small trees during a bed redesign. Success comes down to timing, getting a big enough root ball, and the conditions at the new spot. Cooler shoulder-season weather is much kinder to a transplant than midsummer heat. We'll look at each plant, tell you honestly which ones are worth moving and which are cheaper to replace, and handle it either way.

How much does a garden bed or mulch job cost in Lincoln, NE?

An average mulch refresh runs around $800 and a brand-new bed around $1,000, though both move with size, edging, and plant material. Bulk hardwood mulch from Outdoor Solutions in Roca runs roughly $35–$45 a yard; rock costs more in material, needs fabric under it, and is far heavier to spread, so a rock install often runs two to four times a mulch bed.
